Overall Purpose of the Job

To assume a very senior scientific leadership role managing, supporting, and overseeing the expansion of medical communications business initially across two Envision Pharma Group divisions whose current clients are mostly East Coast and Central USA.

The two divisions this role will initially support have an abundant amount of medical communication opportunities to support and to pursue given the current experiences and client relationships of our teams. We expect the medical communications work across these two divisions will exponentially grow by millions of dollars from existing and new business pursuits over the next few years and we need a scientific force to help push these divisions forward, specifically within the medical communications space. This high-level role will report directly to the Global Business Unit Head and will work in direct partnership with the associated Commercial and Scientific Division Leads.

In short, the Portfolio Scientific Medical Communications Director will be responsible for scientifically managing existing clients/plans from a medical communications perspective, supporting and executing a medical communication strategic plan, providing scientific operational support, and helping to generate new medical communications business. Main Duties

Scientific Oversight of Existing Medical Communications Client Plans

  • Manage existing medical communications accounts to ensure client needs are met, from a scientific perspective.

  • Responsible for ensuring the scientific delivery including an optimal level of resource, expertise, and experience is available to deliver account/clients’ programs of activities.

  • If/when required, actively support the strategic and scientific delivery needs of these plans.

  • Be seen internally and externally as Envision’s medical communications Scientific Lead for designated clients.

  • Collaborate with client and Envision account teams and multichannel department to develop strategic and tactical plans for medical communication accounts/programs.

  • Ensure delivery to agreed standards and adhere to external guidelines including client SOPs.

  • Maintain strong client relationships while providing consistent value-added support.


Medical Communications Strategic Planning

  • Each year, support development of a Medical Communications Operating Plan for designated clients.

  • Once plans are approved, support the successful implementation and execution.

  • Be seen as a strategic partner to designated clients and get heavily involved in key client strategic initiatives.

  • Demonstrate expert knowledge of the medical communications environment, keeping current with latest novel and innovative thinking, and their (potential) impact on our business objectives/offerings.

  • Work with other departments (including Multichannel department) to help internal teams better understand the importance and need for highly strategic multichannel medical communications plans.


Scientific Operational Support

  • Working with Divisional Leads and Global Business Unit Head, ensure structure is in place that will allow divisions to grow from a publications focus into medical communications.

  • Be actively involved in resource planning and management.

  • Ensure successful tactical implementation of each sold/in-progress medical communications project.

  • Lead by example, develop and share ideas and best practices.

  • Proactively avoid, or identify and rectify account issues either directly or indirectly.

  • Demonstrate consistent leadership, innovation, and drive.

  • Handle issues, supporting the team or directly with the client.


Medical Communications Business Development

  • Lead preparation and participation of compelling and successful strategic medical communications for all medical communication pitches/proposals across both divisions.

  • Be positioned as the key company scientific representative at a pitch and throughout net new account initiation.

  • Work with others, as required, to strategize business development opportunities/plans and research new or alternative business concepts, ideas, and/or offerings.


Key Attributes/Competencies

  • Advanced degree – preferably PhD/PharmD/MD.

  • 7+ Years of recent experience working in a senior scientific medical communications client-facing, strategic role.

  • Current and relevant scientific and operational experience within the pharmaceutical industry and/or medical communications agency environments with a track record of scientifically managing multiple brands across the pharmaceutical product lifecycle.

  • Evidence of scientifically supporting and delivery of strategic/tactical multichannel medical communication plans.

  • Midwest or East Coast-based (preferably office based but this is not essential).

  • Periodic domestic and global travel, including weekends, will be required.

  • An organized and disciplined self-starter who thrives on a high level of accountability and can demonstrate strong strategic, scientific, leadership, people, and implementation skills.

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
